Attachment theory began with the observation that the way we were cared for early in life shapes the way we connect as adults — not as destiny, but as a starting pattern. The patterns are surprisingly stable, surprisingly visible, and surprisingly useful to see, because so much of what feels mysterious or broken in our relationships is actually just two attachment styles colliding without either person knowing it.

Researchers generally describe four styles. Secure attachment is the ability to be both close and autonomous — to need someone without losing yourself, and to be needed without suffocating them. Anxious attachment leans toward connection so strongly that distance feels like danger, producing vigilance, reassurance-seeking, and a tendency to merge. Avoidant attachment leans toward autonomy so strongly that closeness feels like threat, producing distance, self-sufficiency, and a tendency to withdraw when things get real. Fearful attachment swings between the two — craving closeness and fearing it at the same time, so that intimacy and retreat alternate in confusing ways.

None of these is a flaw or a diagnosis. They're adaptations — strategies that made sense in the conditions where they formed and that may or may not still serve you. Roughly half the population is securely attached; the other half carries one of the other patterns. If you're in the second half, you're in very good company, and the patterns are genuinely changeable with awareness and the right relationships.

This test uses five questions to estimate your attachment style in close relationships. Answer based on how you actually behave when feelings get real, not how you'd like to think you do. The questions are simple because attachment lives in instinct — in the tiny, automatic responses to closeness and distance that happen before reflection arrives.

When you finish, you'll receive a full attachment profile: your pattern, what it costs and protects, how it shows up in dating and long-term relationships, the styles you're drawn to and clash with, and specific practices for moving toward secure. The goal isn't to relabel yourself — it's to see the pattern so it stops running you and starts becoming a choice.
